A Lil Bit O’ History…
As a regular host and presenter on XM Satellite Radio’s XM 72 Beyond Jazz Channel, Michelle Sammartino felt the need for a window into the even more current Jazz movement. And so the long running program Jammin’ Jazz – Jazz For The New Generation, was born in 2001.
Running five times a week on XM, Jammin’ Jazz was one of the most popular shows on the channel. Now after a short hiatus Michelle is elated to present this show again in a whole new dynamic, for you, the new generation of Jazz enthusiast! The show has expanded from one hour to TWO hours of intense funk driven jazz, and that last half hour…. wooooo weeee kick off those cobwebs and get ready to dance around your living room! “Jazz is something that evolves and reflects the times, and this music does that right now, and more. The current wave of artists pay homage, merge influences, experiment, as well as lay new ground. The music is playful, and dark, and danceable, and intricate, celebratory and worldly… it is boundless and deserves a platform. That is what this show is all about.”
Now you can hear Jammin’ Jazz on Chicago’s own Home for Jazz and Blues, WDCB 90.9 FM and wdcb.org. It features all that is cool and groovey, and happenin’ in Modern Jazz right this minute. Michelle focuses on artists that are currently touring as well as the influences that made them choose this glamorous profession. Jammin’ Jazz features not just new modern Jazz, but the marriage of Jazz and Funk, Jazz and Rock, Jazz and Soul, Jazz and Hip Hop – from New Orleans to New York to Chicago to San Fran to Montreal to Europe to Japan and more. If it is happenin’ in the world of Jazz you can find it here.
Some of the artists you can hear on the show include:
Garage A Trois
Medeski Martin & Wood
The New Mastersounds
Jazz Mandolin Project
The Preservation Hall Jazz Band
Benevento Russo Duo
Dr Lonnie Smith
Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings
Dirty Dozen Brass Band
Porter Batiste and Stoltz
…and that is just the beginning… You can check out her playlists every week here!
The other purpose of the show is to support these artists and musicians in their plight to support themselves. We all know that you can find music all over the place for free. But no one works for free. No one gives away their products and expects to be able to feed themselves. One of the missions of Jammin’ Jazz is to help bring light to the issue of PAYING for music. Whether that is purchasing CDs from the artists themselves or going out there and experiencing live music. Michelle spreads the word that the only way to keep these artists creating AND eating, is to pay for their services.
Do your part folks! Go out there and vote for music with your dollars!
